The State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-bioresources (SKLCUSA) is jointly established by South China Agricultural University and Guangxi University, which was issued by Ministry of Science and Technology in China in March, 2011. It is a breakthrough as the first state key laboratory among the provincial universities of Guangdong province.
Supported by 3 national key disciplines, which are crop genetics and breeding, pomology, and agricultural insect and harmful biological control, SKLCUSA maintains or reaches an advanced international level in crop germplasm creation, resource collection and conservation of wild rice, subtropical fruit trees, forest trees and medicinal plants, cloning of related genes to hybrid rice fertility control and its molecular mechanisms, mechanisms of efficient nutrient absorption by roots and its genetic improvements. Meanwhile, the laboratory holds a leading position in China in the following research areas as: rice molecular design breeding, genetic research on rice blast disease system, insecticidal plant resource research and its functional component use.
Now the laboratory has 46 permanent staff members, including 28 full professors (researchers), 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 distinguished professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, 2 winners of National Outstanding Youth Fund Project, 5 distinguished professors of Guangdong colleges and universities (the Pearl River Scholars), and 4 winners of Program for New (Trans-) Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education.
